Aston Villa failed where West Ham succeeded, as they were eliminated from the Europa Conference League by former Hammers opponent Olympiacos.

Unai Emery’s side was widely expected to replicate David Moyes‘ Prague triumph this season, but this outcome suggests that winning the trophy is tougher than many pundits had suggested.

Despite dominating much of the second leg, the Greek side won 2-0. Aston Villa never really stood a chance in the tie and struggled more against Olympiacos than West Ham, ultimately losing 6-2 on aggregate.

This result concludes a disappointing season for Premier League clubs in European competitions, with the UEFA coefficient ranking downgraded after last season’s triumphs, where West Ham and Manchester City both won European titles.
