Match preview: Tomkins set to be the odd man out

|

JenkWest Ham look all set to make just one change to the team that beat Arsenal last Sunday, when Slaven Bilic’s outfit face an in-form Leicester City at the Boleyn on Saturday.

Carl Jenkinson is all set to make his first appearance of the season and James Tomkins – who was impressive at right back last week – looks likely to be the player who’ll start proceedings on the bench.

That means 16-year-old Reece Oxford will make his second Premier League appearance, with the previously injured Pedro Obiang joining the squad.

Likely team: Adrian; Jenkinson, Reid, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Noble, Kouyate, Oxford; Payet, Zarate, Sakho.

I agree with that change. Tomkins did great as a defensive right back but at home we should be playing the more attacking Jenkinson. I would agree with bringing Tomkins back for more difficult away games like the next 2 coming up

I believe in repaying good displays with loyalty,Tomkins should play until he lets the team down or we need to change tactics,
Jenkinson can sit on the bench until he is needed, why bring a player back for away games when he was playing out of position unless you are going to give him a chance to make that place is own, many so called central defenders have moved to right back such as Johnson and Richards and we tried to sign both,
We can still go forward if attacking is the problem take one of the defensive midfielders off and add Lanzini or Samulsun,
But I would reward the team by leaving it as it was,
Just change the bench to include Jenkinson,Obiang,Samulsun,Lanzini ,Randolph and another Jarvis or Cullen

Nah,is the right move imo.Tonks did his defensive job at Arsenal superbly but we are at home.We need Jenks for his attacking style. Its a squad game. You put the best team on the pitch on that day.Home to Leicester we should have Jenks ability going forward definately.

  • kevin says:

Don’t change anything .. Tomkins is a wink away from international football and should be given his chance over a LOAN PLAYER . Tomkins also scores goals with head ,, how much must he do to cement his first team selection .
It’s this kind of loose talk that provokes problems that are badly invited for the sake of an article .

  • Baz Brushe says:

Loose talk? What the hell are you on about? I read some weird things on here but this is one that really baffles me.

  • SA Bubbles says:

And don’t forget Leicester has been playing 3 at the back. so with jenks pace he will cause them a lot of problems down the wing.

  • TysonM says:

Sorry Kevin, totally lost me on the ‘loose talk’.The article just stats that Jenks could come in for Tomkins.Though tough on Tonka it is the right decision as well.We are playing at home.We dont need Tonks who though he has played rb before is a cb.Play the right player in the right position.Jenks will give us far more options going forward.Players understand it is a squad game & im sure Tomkins will understand you have a proper right back playing there.Dont get what the issue is to be honest 😉

    • TysonM says:

As for Tomkins being a wink away from international, nah,i aint having that Kev,sorry mate 😀

  • Lt. Quickdrawovic 1st Slavalry C&H Regt says:

I think Jenks will come in but maybe not at the expense of Tomkins. He’s the best ball player of the CBs and right footed whereas the other two are left footed. Hard choices for Slav following Sunday but I think we may see a season of rotation with numerous changes. Slav will adjust his tactics and team according to opposition and will know with a deeper squad quality wise he’s got them all to keep happy.

  • JimmyF says:

Agree with bubs to a point.Yep its good to reward players for fine displays. However surely we should play Jenks as the attacking option at home to Leicester. If fatman had played Tomkins instead of Jenks at home last season & had three centrebacks in the back four he would have been crucified, lol,Jenks for me 100%.As for the loose talk, sorry im as baffled as the rest.

  • scotty71 says:

A wink away????unusual, loose talk?odd, tomkins being dropped in place of jenkinson?priceless.

  • canchaz says:

I believe Tommo has also played as a defensive midfielder at odd times, hasn’t he?. If so I don’t think he’ll be out in the cold much. By the tome this season is over, we’re bound to have to face some injuries and we also don’t know yet what kind of cup run we might have.

  • scotty71 says:

After we beat arsenal the next day we all knew jenko was coming back, the good thing is i think tomkins will get a chance because i think for some games slav could try 3 at the back, ive always rated tomkins but he’s never been as good as he could’ve been, still youngish though for a defender.

  • kevin says:

Ok everyone ; it’s the headline of the article that get’s to me ” Tomkins looks odd man out “.
Could have been a bit more wary in my opinion . That’s All .
I think a bit deep at times . , but it wouldn’t surprise me if Tomkins got a deserved England call up , ,, sorry Mtyson .
West Ham have it all to do this weekend to build a good run of results , because Leicester will be looking to build on theirs as well . It will be a very revealing game .

  • JimmyF says:

Agreed Kevin, will be good to continue our great start.Would be a real shame to not build on last sunday.Dont think too deep though Kev.It is too stressful 😉

  • Radai Lama says:

Dont think so deeply Kev,go with the flow.Going to be a season with lots of ups & downs.Relax that man!! 😀

  • techiezone says:

Jenks in, Tomks in (call up yes), Ogbonna bench, Reece (Obiang sub)…Win, Win..Win

Ffs,the guys a joke.Just total sour grapes. All that ‘West Ham Way’ crap.Well sorry ********,you might have tried every game to win but 3 wins in more tha half a season shows you couldnt do it.But we all knew he would have to slag us off sooner rather than later.D*ckhead.
