Bill Bonds will not be watching West Ham’s game against Manchester City this afternoon as he reckons pre-season games are as near meaningless as it gets.
He said: I understand people getting a bit worked up when things go wrong and you don’t want to be suffering big defeats such as happened to Sunderland a little while back – beaten 5-0 by Celtic.
“But it really is all about getting fit – that’s all. And you can’t take any game seriously when you have totally new personnel appearing every five minutes!!!
“There’s no points or Cup available so really the matches mean little and shouldn’t be taken seriously.
“In my day these games were treated as an exercise in getting up to full fitness and I don’t honestly think anything has changed in that respect .”
Wise man is Bonzo.Screw watching friendlies,i agree 😁
True upto a point but last season the players weren’t putting any effort in and their fitness could be seen to be well off the mark and not improving much, also if you have new signings its good to see them for the fans. They are meaningless in the grand scheme of things but personally I still enjoy watching them but don’t care much about the result so long as I see a few good things from the players, hopefully City won’t be out to humiliate anyone and the game can be played in a genuinely friendly exhibition COYI !!!
Bonzo is spot on. If West Ham don’t win today, too many fans will be moaning like hell.
Theres only one thing worse than fans that take friendlies seriously and thats the ones who sit on matchthreads getting wound up about them.
I mean seriously have a word with yourself.
Well call me a traitor but i shall continue to watch the Test match over this Premier League branding circus.
Agree with Bill, and Dan, not only will I not watch them but I won’t get worked up if we get beat or excited if we don’t. Like I said the other day the first match to get yourself in a froth about, if you must, is Manure away. Which we will win of course.
Not to be taken seriously at all . I see them as training and fitness exercises . If we take it too seriously we are inviting unwanted and unnecessary injuries , a thing we can do without
Totally agree Billy ..
A common sense view from a giant from a common sense era! 100% behind Billy’s comments.
