Angry fans respond to “plastic” insult

|

A ClaretandHugh blogger raised the issue of “plastic West Ham fans” and precisely what that is supposed to mean when  used as an insult.

The blog from ClaretandHugh FB member Carol Combes brought a phenomenal response and has become one of the most discussed ever on the site.

Carol took issue with those who threw the expression at those who could no longer get to games. She asked whether we suddenly became plastic because we move away from the East End and wondered where that left David Gold!!!

Here’s a random selection of the numerous responses to her piece which can be seen at the CandH FB Group page..

West-Ham-Upton-ParkO Agree with you carol 100%. Its just a sign of the times , many reasons but far to many to start talking about ?
True supporters of a club carry the badge the rest of their life , no matter where you are in the world !

O Spot on. Carol, you nailed it. I’d be upset at being thought plastic simply because I’m living abroad. I live and breath our beloved club.

O We are West Ham UNITED, to me that’s like we are ALL extended family with a shared love and passion for our club, lets leave all the sniping and insults to other clubs,we are better than that and do not want to be dragged down like that,we all share the same love,West Ham United.

O Great read Carol. You should be proud. I can’t say I agree with everything but it should but your right that term shouldn’t be aimed as an insult.

O No-one in their right minds would support West Ham…. unless they were a true West Ham supporter. Look at the massive failures etc…along with the occasional highs. The term Plastic is rubbish and belongs in the bin. Just saying you are a West Ham supporter says it all whether circumstances allow you to get to matches or not. It’s what we share. West Ham brotherhood. COYI!

so they’re calling fans who are signing up for the Olympic stadium, but never came to games at Upton Park, plastic fans. So what. They are all fans. Fans round the world who watch on the Internet or tv or who can’t attend for whatever reason are no less a supporter either.
