Slaven Bilic was today asked whether Jose Fonte was having a medical at the club.
But he refused to give away much information after the reporter had asked for more details.
Instead the manager said: “Not a medical but I said a few times already that I ain’t going to talk about names.
“I am sad we are the team that everything is open, now I like what Wenger said once, we are not talking transfers, we are working on transfers.
“For some reason it is always in the papers although 95 per cent of that is not true, just rumours, it doesn’t help us. Some of those stories are true and it definitely doesn’t help so I am not going to talk about the names that we are trying to get.
He added: “One or two players we need and we are going to try. Twenty four hours hopefully.”
Despite his protests the player in question is thought to be 33 year old Southampton centre back Jose Fonte on a two and a half year contract on £70,000 per week. The deal could reach £12m with add-ons – with around £8m requested up front.
find it unbelievable we let Tomkins go to sign this guy for more money and more weekly wages. 1 week Gold is saying on twitter that 15 million for Defoe is too much yet we’ve done this. This player is only moving to secure a payday. Is he really going to put himself on the line like collins does, is he better than Ogbonna? Maybe, but the youth lads won’t reach full potential unless they are playing so this is another person in front of Oxford and Burke. We are 8 million down and 70thousand out of the weekly pot. AND still, no recognised right back or striker. Personally I do not think he is even that good a player. I have a few Southampton supporting friends who think he’s average at best but has the occasional good game. Much like Diame was for us!!

Won’t be anyone more happy than me if Fonte is the real deal and plays his skin off for us. I’m born in Portsmouth so anything that makes Southampton a bit weaker I am all for. However, all I’m saying is if we have 8million for a CB surely we could stretch a bit more for other players and not offer peanuts for them. We need a striker a position that would make a real difference instead of playing hardball with Brentford or just pay the extra for Defoe! The same problem with the right back. Scouted the lad from wolves Iorfa “apparently” but we would stump up the asking price. I also think Snodgrass would be more useful for 8million who has much better delivery and set piece ability than anyone in the squad now we’ve lost Payet yet we offered just 3 million and I’ve read today Burnley are intrested and prepared to pay more money than us!
why do people bang on about Tomkins ??? couldn’t get in our side and we got £10m for him.. I can see us sneaking a few in over the next couple of weeks, Defoe being one of them if sunderland lose their next couple of games
Well i better keep quiet about Tomkins i never rated him when he played for us & since the Claret & Blue tinted glasses have truly come off i think he is average at best..Can i say that now he is at Palace.I thought £10 mill was a great deal for us lol 😁
I like Iorfa 8909 i think he is a decent youg player,we could do far worse thats for sure.I mentioned the other day i think he is pretty tidy.But what do i know i aint no expert 😂

Yeah I would second that last comment from Long Fella. Older players obviously become a bit of an injury risk, but Carroll is not exactly old. I think it would be a good move.
