Former Hammers kid looks the perfect Moyes answer

|

David Moyes could do a lot worse than take a fresh look in the direction of Reece Oxford in his search ks for a new central defender as the former Hammers looks the perfect answer right now.

After a difficult time in his latter days at the Hammers and a slow start for his Bundesliga club Augsburg the player finally looks to be coming of age in the game.

Oxford, now 23, was awarded a £20k a week contract whilst still a kid at the Hammers and that was reputed to have allegedly seen him go off his game on the too much too soon platform.

He became the Premier League’s second youngest ever player when he made his debut aged 16 and 198 days and big things were expected of him having been labelled the next Rio Ferdinand.

Things did not work out at the Hammers though and he had loan spells at Reading, Borussia Monchengladbach and Augsburg, whom he eventually joined on a permanent deal in 2019.

However, this season he has become the most impressive defender in the Bundesliga with the most interceptions in the league – 59-  and 117 clearances, the second most in the league.

The problem is he now has a contract until 2025 having signed a new one last year and although www.transfermarkt.com value him at around £8 million, he would probably cost closer to £20-£25 million.

But although he is looking business  one wonders whether the club would pay such a fee for a player who was one of their own and they allowed to leave in difficult circumstances
