Gerrard kills off Hammers striker hopes

|

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has made his position concerning striker Ollie Watkins very clear.

Regular readers of ClaretandHugh will remember us being the first site to break the news several weeks ago that the Villa striker was a David Moyes target.

That was followed up later by the likes of the Guardian and others but forgetting to insert a key quote we had given from our insider at the London Stadium.

He has told us when we inquired whether Ivan Toney was a target that there was no interest but that David Moyes was enthusiastic about Watkins.

He added, however there was little chance of the switch happening as Villa boss Steve Gerrard simply wasn’t interested in selling the former Brentford front man.

Now Gerrard has made it very public that is his position and that we, or many other interested clubs, had better start looking elsewhere.

He is quoted widely as saying: “We love Ollie and really enjoy working with him.

“To take this club where we need to take it we need goal scorers, we need top players and Ollie Watkins is a top player.

“I will fight as hard as I need to fight if it ever comes up.

“But it’s not going to because I know the owners and I know Christian Purslow (CEO) and Johan Lange (Director of Football) are on the same page.”
