Hammers lose and get worst of two worlds

|

Sheffield United 1 Irons 0

By Hugh Southon

That was horrible – perhaps the hardest defeat to take this season after a shocking giveaway goal and yet another VAR handball decision against us.

The hosts won the game via a goal which was handed to them by a poor ball forward from Martin which Balbuena failed to read and McBurnie hammered a simple shot into our net.

Late goal ruled out by VAR

Then at the end a brilliant run forward by Declan Rice and pass to Snoddy saw the sub score of a post only for VAR to rule it out for handball in the build up.

Sickening! The worst of two worlds.

On top of all that was the loss of Lukasz Fabianski who broke down when clearing and may or may not be out for another spell.

Beyond all the ill luck however, was the fact that the Hammers need more work on their energy levels as the Blades dominated the later stages of the game.

There’s still a fitness issue hangover from the Pellegrini spell in charge and David Moyes will have his hands full getting them up to the required level for a tough set of matches ahead.

We had our chances – none more so than when Lanzini – after a Blades defender stumbled – chose to fire at the keeper from close range rather than find Haller with a quick ball while he wasin space.

Masuaku enjoyed some great forward running before being subbed and Anderson was at the heart of everything but the reality is we have some worrying times ahead.

It’s supposed to be a sport not a computer game.

  • master says:

    Lanzini
    Zabaleta
    Noble

Worst players on the field and not premier league standard (noble because he simply cannot ah in a 2).

  • Robert says:

Moyes has done well up to tonight’s game. But not to start fornals was a massive mistake. He was one of our most inform players.

    Just leaving Sheffield.
So with Fa/Martin in goal and five at the back we lose.
Under Pellegrini with Roberto in goal and four at the back we have the better of a draw.
Maybe it’s not the new Moysiah after all.

We perhaps deserved a draw but we should not be talking about VAR, this is the rule no more please. The problem we have now is the following. Moysie showed me tonight why he is not a top manager and highlighted the concerns I had when he was given the job. The positive he picked a good system, his team selection was ok, personally I would have kept Diop in the side. However what he has demonstrated in his previosu managerial roles is his inability to make the right decisions off the bench. We are losing 1-0 and he takes both Lanzini and Masa off. I find it incredible and then to confounds this he leaves Noble by far the worse player on the pitch tonight on for the entire game. His decision not to bring Fornals into in misfield for Noble was just astounding as the first replacement. The other crazy thing is he had no striker on the bench, incredible lack of foresight. Honeymoon is over now and losing Fab to injury surely now means we cannot afford to take the risk with Randolph. We need a keeper who is fit and has PL experience.

  • David norton says:

We cannot survive in premiership without fab and playing noble and zabletta every match the owners need to spend money not on a 32 year old injured goalkeeper. Either put up or sell up

  • MOJEN says:

If we do not get a decent up and coming goalkeeper to challenge Fabianski we will go down. If we do not get another midfielder-one at least-we will go down. If we do not get someone to put the ball in the net we will go down. Minimum requirements in my opinion to have a chance of staying up. Thats without the rebuild i think is required in the summer. One final point how can it be handball if it was headed on to rices hand by a Sheffield united player ? the whole system is flawed. However unless there are big changes quickly i fear we will be relegated.I quite simply have just about had enough of the what appears to be a complete lack of ambition-a club with probably not far off the greatest support in the country-no the greatest considering what they have put up with. Year after year after year.

    The honeymoon is over .
Moyes not responsible for Fab injury , also not responsible for Martin error . BUT he is responsible for leaving Noble on for 90 mins .
Appalling as Noble was awful . What was Fornals supposed to do in 10 mins .
As for the other players , specifically our forward players – no one prepared to take responsibility, all waste of time sideways and back passing .
We are in trouble with this squad and probably with this manager .

  • HB says:

The holes in our squad there for all to see tonight. Goal Keeper, Central Midfielder, RB and Striker needed. Its mid January already. Tick Tock, Mr Sullivan.
