Lessons learned so is this the team for City

|

What did we learn from last night’s game with Manchester City next on the agenda?

It would be easy to get a bit carried away and start make all sorts of suggestions about the future of certain players as a result.

I’ve already seen one – that Mark Noble, who was particularly impressive – should reconsider his decision to retire.

Is he a better bet than Benrahma right now?

He certainly didn’t look his usually jovial normal self in a post match interview probably on account of knowing that he’s less than unlikely to be playing on Sunday. Understandable.

Now in his 18th season, he is bound to get more chances as the “wall of games” roll on by.

A 18th season? Hmm. I don’t think he’s the type of guy to have a change of mind so let’s hope he can keep his form and go out on a Europa Trophy winning high.

Nikola Vlasic was improved over earlier appearances but let’s wait until we see similar performances at Premier League level. Personally I expect them.

Craig Dawson worries me a tad to be honest and I believe Issa Diop did enough to earn a place at the Etihad on Sunday.

Cress will obviously be back despite an improved performance from Masuaku along with Mikey, Declan and the remaining PL players.

However, I am becoming more convinced that Manu Lanzini is becoming a better bet that Benny at the moment.

He may not be as spectacular but his work rate is impressive and and general ability is returning.

So here’s my team: Fabianski; Johnson, Diop, Zouma, Cresswell, Rice, Soucek, Lanzini, Bowen, Fornals, Antonio.

I agree that team with two exceptions: Coufal for Johnson and Kral for Soucek as he needs a rest

In my most humble opinion, Rapid Vienna would be mid-table in our Championship – which is why Mark Noble was able to cope well against them last night. If Mark were to be selected against Manchester City on Sunday or in the upcoming December games again Chelsea or Arsenal, West Ham might find themselves overrun in midfield. Let him have his odd appearance in the FA Cup (depending on who they get drawn against) and 10 minutes off the bench when we need an extra man in midfield to see out a game. It’s my biggest hope that when we lift a trophy before the end of May, that Mark Noble is there to do the job. As for next season, I really can’t see him wanting to play down the leagues, when his value would be to coach in our academy system.

Nobes was really jovial at the final whistle, particularly when he was chatting to Perkins, I thought. Totally agree about Dawson, though.

Agree with your insight on Dawson and Benny – I thought Lanzini looked bright and would like Diop in. On that score I wonder if a back three would be beneficial against City, thus playing Coufal r/b and Johnson l/b with Cress in back three? The time must come soon to rest Soucek and play Kral if fit? Maybe not City but soon.
