Moyes cools on striker target

By Hughie Southon

West Ham boss David Moyes has cooled on his latest striker target Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca.

Initially reported to be the subject of  €40 million bid by the Hammers, the club looked likely to beat Paris St Germain to the striker

The French outfit had – as reported by Sky’s Dharmesh Seth – bid £35 million plus extras whilst the Hammers had topped that by €5 million .

In the meantime PSG had moved and are apparently close to signing Hugo Ekitike from Reims.

Broja remains an Irons target along with Ben Brereton-Diaz and the club also confirmed to ClaretandHugh they have indeed been in with the £40 million plus extras  bid for Scamacca – a Moyes/ Rob Newman target.

However, the manager still has to decide whether he will go for the player or maybe bring in Broja along, possibly, with the Blackburn Rovers man.

The manager demonstrated the same approach when signing Kurt Zouma after waiting through the transfer window to make his final decision on the Chelsea central defender.

We’re getting Brereton Díaz, aren’t we?

    You’re going way OTT here.

I’ve seen some reports from European football experts saying how aguerd is one of the brightest left footed CBs in Europe and was a surprise no elite clubs looked at him, not cheap either so not sure why you’re picking apart that signing.

Why are you crying about Tarkowski? Clearly we didn’t want him.

Ridiculous over reaction. So far 3 good signings and more to come by the sounds of it. Let’s see how this forward situation plays out but if we end up with diaz from Blackburn then of course will be very disappointing and we can address it then

Downes seems like a good squad filler. An ideal noble replacement. Young and home grown. Don’t see the issue

Let’s face it, we did bid for Phillips and this was confirmed by Moyes. Why would Leeds sell their captain and best player in the middle of the season when they’re fighting relegation , course they were gonna turn down our bid but tbh was pointless even trying anyway.

How is it that transfer targets are not already lined up? And if they are, how can Moyes go from having a transfer target to not fancying him? Surely those decisions on who are the targets have been made well in advance of now. I understand that some players may not have been viewed as available and then all of a sudden might become so but surely in this day and age of analysis and over-analysis the managers are aware of who is actually playing football and if they might be any good or not. Or is our scouting network really that miniscule that the club aren’t actually aware of every decent player out there?

It says to me that this target wasn’t Moyes’ in the first place but someone else’s, otherwise it just doesn’t make any sense.

Still, no need to panic, there’s still 6 weeks of this nonsense left!

Hope David Moyes will reveal after window closes what really happened! So far it’s all rumour and conjecture. Most of the criticism in these comments is easily explained. Our big targets want Champions league football so no chance even if GSB bankrupted themselves! In the case of Takowski we chose a different player, wisely in my view!

Oh No. Please not again. Dither, Dither, Dither. I think this Board & Dithering Dave are a match made in hell.
Why can’t we just get transfers over the line & done with.
Either Scamacca is our top striker target or why make offers in the first place?
Other teams scout players make a decision & then go & get their man.
We have to play around in making offers in players to make it look like we want to buy them. Or worse at the last minute change our minds. I think to Moyes & the Board it’s a tactical game. To the rest of the world it’s a Sham.

  • Pessimist says:

Time for the Board to grow up and over rule this damn tyrant. The man is a pain in the rear during the transfer window. Send him and his family somewhere on a nice holiday with no way of keeping in touch with anyone. Buy the squad the club needs, not the tiny one that Moyes seems obsessed with and which will run out of steam again at the end of the Season again.

Why wait for a Player who may have a lasting injury. Get a couple of good ones in ?

That’s scuppered then – what an awful message – here is our offer, yes more than PSG, ah sorry, I’m not sure if I want you after all….never mind we are selling Soucek, or maybe not , I might not,, selling Vlasic, perhaps, not sure about Masuaku, Diop is doing the hokey cokey with Fulham, not quite sure about him , still let’s disillusion our U23 stars so they clear off on their own, saves making a decision eh? At least we are in for Broja – if they even want to sell him, oh yes and lovely Lingard, who is playing a cheeky hard to get….

Sorry Hugh as I was checking my post a big stubborn advert kept jumping in, so it appears I have submitted it 3 times. Please ignore the first 2 posts. Sorry.

Dithering dave or second guessing Dave……i for one wish he would just make his mind up and decide because all his indecision does is signal to whatever player he may be looking at is to make them think naaaa i don’t want to be part of that…..is his decision over Hugill making him like this….nearly two years since he got shot of Haller and still he waits….WE NEED A STRIKER not a winger turned into a makeshift striker no a genuine STRIKER….Preseason or not if you saw Antonios miss when clean through against Ipswich he was as decisive in what to do as Moyes is here…..so sign a striker we all know it will be the cheap option so just bite the bullet man.

This is starting to get tedious.

  • SelsdonHammer says:

Oh no! Here we go again. We really shouldn’t be surprised by now, but how exasperating can Moyes get? What is Scamacca meant to think about coming to West Ham, if Moyes changes his mind again? Unbelievable!

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

Anyone feeling De Ja Vous ? Looks like we are about to sign a target for a big fee and suddenly it’s reported as manager has changed his mind…

This is rubbish, we as supporters are being sold down the line by our Boris Johnson-esque directors who have no interest in spending what is required to get us to the next level, they tried to sign Diop failed, they tried to sell Soucek failed, we have bought a midfielder who isn’t PL standard another Jordan Huggill probably a Sullivan purchase.

Aguerd looks good on paper, but why were none of the big clubs in for him if he is that good ? Areola is inexpensive as a transfer fee, our directors are a joke, Kalvin Phillips is sold to City for less than we supposedy offered, same with Raphinha if we believe the PR or pack of lies…

Broja is a prospect, nothing more, Lingard doesn’t see any ambition, Ward-Prowse has no intention of joining us, we couldn’t get Tarkowski on a free transfer despite having European football to offer he went to a relegation candidate, we can’t even get the best prospects from the teams that went down…

It’s all very predictatable from GSB, the Walt Disney directors who lived in cloud cuckoo land and couldn’t do a deal if it was given to them gift wrapped.
