Moyes turned down striker swoop

|

By Dave Langton

West Ham had the option to sign Adam Hlozek from Sparta Prague this summer but boss David Moyes decided against the swoop.

Sources at the club have told us that Moyes was concerned about the player’s lack of physicality, believing that he was simply too lightweight to make the move to the Premier League.

He has instead moved to Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal and will spend the next couple of seasons attempting to prove himself in a top European league.

Hlozek is just 19 but has plenty of experience under his belt, playing 132 times for Sparta and also winning 15 caps for the Czech Republic.

Moyes did not believe the teenager would easily adapt to life in the top-flight, and as such, he turned down the opportunity to make a bid for the player.

Daniel Kretinsky’s connection to Sparta could have greased the wheels, and the deal would have been a relatively simple one for the Hammers to complete if Moyes had given it the green light.

Hlozek also has a history of serious injuries, previously fracturing his metatarsal and that also fed into Moyes’ decision.

Many believed the deal was certain to go ahead given Kretinsky’s involvement but demonstrates the manager is very much his own man.

another one bites the dust, never mind, maybe we can save 100 million of this summers transfer budget, then buy him for 100 mill next year, after hes set the bundesliga on fire this season

Although I like Hlozek think Moyes may have been right at this stage of Hlozek’s career, in the Euro’s he did nothing which may indicate his level isn’t quite there and he may have become another Vlasic or Kral.

Goals in the Czech league don’t translate into goals in our league. Just look at poor Sima who we were heavily linked with last summer, he went to Brighton and has been a bench warmer for Stoke this season. He could still come good but when? Would we have need to do that with Hlozek? We kind of need someone to come straight in and that might be a big ask for a 19yo with no prem experience. We all want to see youngsters come to the club and develop but do we want that at the expense of our current performance? Personally I would have liked us to roll the dice on this lad but I’m not crushed that we didn’t. I want us to keep pushing at the right end of the table and having some hope of keeping our best players at the club.
