Sir Trevor Brooking could have been expected to have seen it all at West Ham United but what he saw last night at the London Stadium left him amazed and delighted as the rest of us.

The Hammers home grown legend believes it was one of the great all time displays from his beloved Irons declaring: “To go into a stadium like that and perform we way we did was a real delight.

“We were second best probably during the first 25 minutes but once we got in front it was an entirely different story. Then when the second went in it was comfortable – not always the West Ham way of things.”

Sir Trev was particularly keen to single out Craig Dawson and of course the manager for special praise saying: “Craig is an older player and has become used to playing through knocks and injuries. He was a great signing and we can thank the manager for that.

David has worked with a small squad which has ensured the lads have got to know each other and support each other so well when perhaps injuries or whatever kick in.”

He’s also aware that the manager has come in for criticism from someĀ  for not strengthening but agrees with Moyes that it’s no good bringing in players who are no better than we have.

He said: The winter really is a bad time to sign but what I think we may well see now is the manager building on what he has in the summer.

He has done so well with a small squad from the point of view I’ve mentioned and to rotating what he has so successfully.

Now he will get on with it and the rest of us are here to support him and the squad. It was a brilliant night, a great performance.

Can we win it? Yes but there are some very good teams left. Both German teams are excellent but we have to be confident.”
