The Manchester United fan who suffered a heart attack and passed away at the London Stadium yesterday has been named as Ronnie Greenwood.
The 71 year-old man lived in a small village called Whitworth just outside Rochdale was attending the match with his best friend Gerry but collapsed at the back of the Sir Trevor Brooking upper stand in the away section. Paramedics and doctors carried out CPR for over 30 minutes but the supporter was pronounced dead at arrival at hospital.
His nephew Leon Hazeldine said: “All of the family are devastated as you can imagine because it was so sudden. He was a character in our family and village. He had been a Manchester United fan for 60 years and went home, away and abroad. He’ll be greatly missed.”
A JustGiving page has been set up by Bandit Bus Travel organisers Johnny Loughlin and Nathan Ashcroft, a company who help to put on coach travel for Manchester United supporters to away fixtures over the country, who are aiming to help raise funds to help towards Mr Greenwood’s funeral.
The page says: “All donations would be greatly received to help his family in raising the the funds for the cost of his funeral at this sad time. We would also like to invite his closest family members to a match at old Trafford, VIP style, in honour of Ronnie’s memory. Please dig deep and donate as much as you can to give this true Manchester United Fan the send off he rightly deserves.Donatations are welcome from everyone as nobody deserves to go to a match and not return home to their families.”
