West Ham Underdogs? But Alonso Might Have Helped Moyes

West Ham might be underdogs but Leverkusen need to watch out

West Ham United faces a daunting task in the Europa League quarterfinals, going up against the Bundesliga’s near-unbeatable Bayer Leverkusen. While the Hammers are major underdogs, a recent social media post by Leverkusen may have inadvertently aided David Moyes‘ preparation.

Despite West Ham being labelled underdogs due to Leverkusen’s impressive unbeaten record, the Premier League team shouldn’t be completely written off. Their attacking talent and European experience make them a potential threat.

While Leverkusen boasting about their strengths on social media isn’t unusual, their latest post might have given West Ham valuable intel.

Most wouldn’t necessarily identify full-backs as Leverkusen’s key players, but their post highlights the significant contributions of Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong.

The post reveals a combined total of 46 goal contributions between the two full-backs this season. Grimaldo, the left-back, boasts 11 goals and 14 assists, while Frimpong, the right-back, has a remarkable 11 goals and 10 assists despite playing four fewer games.

These statistics paint a clear picture for Moyes. Shutting down these attacking full-backs could neutralise nearly half of Leverkusen’s offensive threat.

West Ham also enters this clash with a point to prove after a pre-season drubbing by Leverkusen (4-0). This adds an extra layer of motivation for the Hammers.

With the valuable intel gleaned from Leverkusen’s social media activity, David Moyes will likely focus his team training on containing the full-backs and exploiting any weaknesses identified. The upcoming international break provides a perfect opportunity to strategise and prepare for this crucial European tie

Leverkusen equalised against Qarabag in extra time in the away match, and scored two goals in extra time (winner in the 97th minute) in the home leg to win 5-4 on aggregate. Shows they can ship goals if attacked, and Qarabag was within a whisker of winning both matches. West Ham can win if Moyes gets the right tactics.
