Yarmo’s heartbreak

|

Andriy Yarmolenko was left in tears as Ukraine lost their vital World Cup qualifying play-off against Wales on Sunday.

The Ukraine skipper was one of many players in blue on the day to sink to their knees at the final whistle, with their emotions overtaking them.

Wales won the game 1-0, and Yarmo actually scored the winning goal, inadvertently directing Gareth Bale’s free-kick into his own net.

The Hammer – who is set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the month – was also denied a penalty in controversial circumstances.

He appeared to be kicked in the heel by Joe Allen as the midfielder attempted to clear the ball but, for some reason, neither the referee nor VAR decided to intervene.

Ukraine fought to the very end, as everyone expected them to, but they simply couldn’t find that finishing touch.

Wales will subsequently be going to the World Cup in Qatar in November and will play England, as well as Iran and the USA, in the group stages.

Hardly a surprise VAR don’t get it right when a West Ham player is involved?
