Cresswell future in the balance

Aaron Cresswell’s future at West Ham appears to be in the balance according to various reports which have leaked into the public domain.

Injury and loss of form over the past 12 – 18 months have put the once reliable left back in the frame for a possible move.

The defensive role has been under discussion for a long time now with neither he or Arthur Masuaku  looking the answer in a role which continually creates alarm bells when we come under pressure defensively down that side.

He is one of the last Sam Allardyce signings and was bought essentially for his ability to provide aerial service to Andy Carroll.

But with Pellegrini playing an entirely different game (Thank God) his usefulness in that kind of role is now reducing considerably and to be quite honest it’s a quality which has been diminishing from his game for some time.

Defensively he often looks fragile and Masuaku is now a better option going forward  so it could easily be that with just two years left on a seven year deal, this summer may be the time to sell.

Everton have been reported as being interested and after buying him for £4 million in 2014 the Irons would likely double their money.

This looks like the time to sell if the opportunity presents itself and to bring in a hard tackling defender behind the often exciting Masuaku.

  1. I don’t agree about his form diminishing. I think for two seasons that was true, but he’s been back to near his best this season from Newcastle away onwards. What’s more of an issue is that he keeps picking up niggly injuries and that might be worth addressing.

I still think Masuaku is a better option to leave. I think he’ll command a bigger fee and it’s unlikely he’ll ever play on the wing ahead of Anderson. He’s certainly not good enough to rely on defensively.

What’s clear is, we definitely need a new body in that area, and they should be somebody to replace Masuaku and Cresswell, not compete with.

  2. I’ve liked Cress, both as a player and as an influence on morale. Whilst I agree he’s not in the same league as a Danny Rose, let’s not forget he’s proved a better defender than Masuaku (and has actually scored). I’d be nervous about lettiing him move on unless we signed a new super LB.

  3. Its a no brainer, time for a change at left back, if we receive and offer in the region of 6-8m I would sell all day long. We basically have two left back who are on a par, reuse the money to see can we get a better LB than the one that stays.

  4. Well said James you obviously watch the useless cresswell costing us so many points, too slow goes AWOL cant tackle and since two seasons ago stands out as the weak link. New left back masu keep but not playing defender as his no better in that spot

  5. Yea I like Cresswell his injuries have been main issue kook like his form had been coming back & last season played LCB a lot. If Masuaku would only get £8m I’d keep him but I think could get £15m & then I’d sell him unless someone will finally use as LWer tho has been good last fre games since his first game I worried about hoa defence bc he gave away that free kick then they took kick & he jumped up & grabbed the ball in box…
But we would need to take that money to get proper LB & we could. We could get a really good one for less then £1m probably if took a punt on James Justin who has been great at 19 for Luton inverted LB too. Which dintnsee many these days but I’m a fan & would suit MP’s 4222 & style likes them to cut in overlap. Only £50k on Transfermarkt & believe he can play DM & CM too & is very quick & technical 3 goals 8 assists. Bournemourh always do great business & started early with great biybin Kelly for £11m. Also think Espanyol are willing to sell Aaron Martin who had great loan spell at Mainz with 5 assists only 22 is very well rounded Defender with good left foot £10-12m. And I wanted Christian Gunter last summer older 26 but outs up 6-7 assists every season with Freiburg wouldn’t break bank. Jerome Ruselilion at Wolfsburg too & Gerhardt who is LB or Mid. Johothan Silva great season with CD keganea on loan from Sporting hand in 10+ goals. & fan if some Liga MX LBs like Christian Calderon & Fiorentina’s Brighi 26 very good LB LM was a good team before they sacked Pioli now could get relegated. And I would say Lisandro Martínez bc is only 21 from Defensa solid LCB & LN but AJAX got him & Kik Pierie who is same but 18 both for under £10m
