Hammers battle Liverpool for former Steidten favourite

West Ham United are reportedly in a tussle with Liverpool to secure the services of Bayer Leverkusen standout Jeremie Frimpong. Frimpong has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s ascent to the top of the Bundesliga, where they are currently led by Liverpool icon Xabi Alonso.

Having emerged from Manchester City’s youth system, Frimpong is a familiar figure to West Ham’s director of football and former Leverkusen employee Tim Steiden. Manager David Moyes also has prior knowledge of the player, courtesy of his connections with Celtic. The Scottish club acquired Frimpong from City for a nominal fee before subsequently transferring him to the Bundesliga two years later.

West Ham have been linked to Bayer Leverkusen standout Jeremie Frimpong

At 23 years old, Frimpong plays as Leverkusen’s primary attacking outlet from the right-hand side, operating as a right-attacking fullback. He has versatility which may be of interest to David Moyes. He’s capable of playing as a right midfielder and right winger, and has been in remarkable form this season.

Renowned for his remarkable pace, close ball control, and adept dribbling skills, Frimpong is a tricky operator, providing serious attacking threat from defensive positions.

Unfortunately, as with any of the numerous Leverkusen players we are linked with, it’s going to be hard to sign them in January. Steidten’s former club are making a serious push for the Bundesliga title and are all but guaranteed Champions League football next season.
