Issa and me …by Ogbonna

|

Angelo Ogbonna could be playing his last game as a regular starter this evening at Manchester City with Fabian Balbuena now approaching full fitness.

Often criticised for inconsistency at the back the Italian has looked good over his spell in the team and has let nobody down.

Oggy was regularly linked with a move away from the club in the run up to the transfer window but always maintained he was keen to stay at the Irons.

With Winston Reid on long term injury and Declan Rice becoming key to everything in midfield the 30 year old central defender has been a crucial player in the team.

He signed a new contract in 2017 which will keep him at the London Stadium until 2022 and with Winston now back in light training there would appear to be no need for any strengthening at the heart of defence as we approach the end of season.

Discussing his spell in the side alongside Issa Diop with www.whufc.com Oggy declared: “It is very good between Issa and myself.  “We have adapted so quickly to everything and I think we work well together.

“We can fight, we can pass the ball and help the team to play.

“It was good to see him score (against Fulham)  because he got that high. He is a very good defender and has a lot of potential and finally he has scored his first Premier League goal.

“When the defenders get into the box, we must do the most to help the team.

“On Friday it was Issa, last time it was me and before Balbuena, so I think we have had many chances to score and help the team.

“We have to be focused on our game on Wednesday. We know they are a top team with a lot of quality. I scored against them before, but I think it is better if the strikers score. We shall see.”

I think it would be a mistake to lose Oggy. We need depth of options at the back, so even if he’s third choice after Diop and Balbuena (and that’s debatable) he should stay. If someone’s got to go I’d pick Reid as he has a history of being hot-headed.
