Moyes delivers his verdict

|

David Moyes at Nottingham Forest

David Moyes doesn’t believe the Hammers got their just desserts at the City Ground yesterda where we sunk to our second defeat of the season.

It left the Hammers second off bottom with zero points above only Manchester United with Palace and Everton above us – also with no points on the board.

The Hammers goal was something of a disaster being bundled home after the ball rebounded off Ben Johnson’s knee in extra time of the first half.

But whilst admitting that we defended poorly and started badly over the first 20 minutes the Hammers boss insisted that we didn’t deserve the result we got,

Fair enough but at the end of a poor pre-season the situation is bound to be causing some concern as we look ahead to Thursday and the European Conference qualifying clash against Viborg followed by a visit from Brightpn and Hove Albion on Sunday.

Commenting on the game at Forest the manager said: “We defended really poorly, quite often, and we didn’t do that well enough. It cost us a goal through very poor defending, and gave them a chance.

“We have to blame ourselves. Maybe we could have scored three or four goals. But it wasn’t to be today.”

“I think we could say that started early in the game when the goal didn’t count and got disallowed. There were quite a few bits that didn’t feel like they went for us but that happens. You hope maybe, in other games this season, it will go for us.

“The first 20 minutes were really poor. I thought we grew into the game and I don’t think we deserved the result we got, but that’s the one we got in the end.

“We made enough chances to score the goals but we just didn’t take them”

We were expecting it to be tough and we knew they were going to come out, and it was a terrific atmosphere in here. It’s a great old stadium, so it’s what we expected.

“We didn’t cope with it particularly well in the opening 20 minutes but we grew into the game and got a bit better, without being spectacular.

Tactically, we seem to have gone for the long high ball to Antonio route again, which doesn’t work.
We are so much more effective when we play it out and on the deck.
Yesterday , Dec looked off it ( but hasn’t looked at his best this season) is this the added weight of club captaincy bearing down on him?.
Bowen so far is a shadow of himself from last season and even Zouma wasn’t at his imperious best..
Hopefully Benrahma’s contributions will keep him at the club and given a fair crack of the whip, but all of the players need a ‘ how to cross or take corners 101’ as we do not get enough height on crosses and feed the keeper too much on corners.
School report thus far ‘ can do much better’

We should have won but we can’t blame luck . This game tells me we need another defender and creative midfield . We are paper thin in depth so a worry if any other injuries . Benrhama was the shining light !

I have to say Moyes tactics at times with team selection and game management to be poor.
He does play and stick to his favourites and that is evident in burning out the team with limited subs and subbing only as a reaction and too late.
We have 2 fabulous signings and barely have used them, what does that say to other potential player that are thinking to come in. He barely uses youth so we as well close that down seriously.

Agree with WAH1. Journos never ask David after the match why he has left it so late to substitute players who are under-performing or knackered. Nor does anyone ask why when we are short of first team players, he doesn’t bring in any of those younger players. The post-match interviews seem to always give him an easy ride. It’s as if they are worried that DM will refuse to be interviewed by them in the future.
