Rice labelled ‘best midfielder in the world’, club urged to snap him up

|

Teddy Sheringham has labelled Declan Rice the “best midfielder in the world” and has told Manchester United to snap him up this summer.

The ex-West Ham striker was on punditry duty for Sky Sports’ coverage of Spurs’ 5-0 win over Everton on Monday night.

And he believes that United should swoop to bring Rice in to replace Paul Pogba, who is likely to leave the club at the end of the season.

Declan has emerged as one of the very best midfielders in world football in recent months, shining at Euro 2020 as England reached the final, and carrying that form into the Premier League with the Irons.

United have previously been linked with a potential swoop to sign Rice and Sheringham thinks that Ralf Rangnick’s side need to swoop at the end of the season to strengthen their midfield.

We have reported previously that there have been no formal bids for Rice and that remains the case but Sheringham thinks he would be a top-class signing for the Old Trafford club.

Speaking on Sky, as per Metro, he said: “It’s going to be hard for West Ham to keep Declan Rice.

“I spoke to West Ham supporters and said, “he is the best midfielder in the world at the moment”. I rate him highly. He’s got everything a central midfielder needs.

“He understands the game, he’s got good pace, he can control the ball, pass it, make good tackles and get forward.

“He has the stature of Steven Gerrard in midfield – he’s that dominant now that even when he’s getting closed down, he’s got good pace and power about him that he can get away from midfielders. That’s very unusual to have that in a central midfield position.

“[Declan would be an upgrade on Pogba] because he is the best midfielder in the world. Pogba is a talented boy, but leads with the wrong character.

“He doesn’t inspire people around him, he doesn’t inspire his supporters around him whereas someone like Declan does. You want to roll with him, the way he plays the game.”

Man U are a very expensive mess so why would Declan even consider joining such an inferior outfit
