It appears that Winston Reid will return to West Ham in the new year after completing his loan spell in the MLS stateside.
Last week Sporting Kansas City turned down an option of signing Reid permanently.
Kiwi Reid starred for Sporting KC this year on loan from West Ham where he remains contracted until 2023.
Sporting announced this week that Reid was among a group of four players for whom it had “declined contract options” for the 2021 season.
The 33-year-old whose loan has now ended made 10 appearances (eight starts), scored one goal and contributed to two clean sheets in 728 minutes played.
With Angelo Ogbonna, Fabian Balbuena, Iss Diop and loanee Craig Dawson available to David Moyes there appears to be no room in the squad for Reid.
Another crop of centre backs are waiting in the wings with Gonçalo Cardoso, Ali Alese, Joshua Okotcha, Jamal Baptiste, Michael Forbes, Iyiola Adebayo as well as new signing Frederik Alves.
The club may look to cancel Reid’s contract by mutual consent but that may not come cheap unless he can line up another club in January.
He is thought to earn £70,000 per week and that will be the main stumbling block of any deal.
Whatever happens, it appears unlikely Reid will pull on a West Ham shirt again as there appears to be no room at the Inn for him.
No room for him at West Ham? If he’s fit and raring to go, he’ll be an ideal member of the squad. If he’s not ready and willing to play then he will tear up his contract moving on like the gentleman he is.
No room for another Jack Wilshere? I would whole-heartedly agree. I think that Winston Reid is made of better stuff. We need someone like him for today.
Welcome back, Winston.
