Scamacca gets the nod

|

Gianluca Scamacca starts up front against Southampton.

The Italian striker has been picked over Mikey Antonio after the Jamaica international was left battling an illness throughout the week.

He has been deemed fit enough to begin the game on the bench but Scamacca has been selected to start against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

Elsewhere in the team, it appears that Emerson Palmieri has been tasked with playing as a left winger, instead of as a left-back.

Lucas Paqueta is the main support to Scamacca, while the back four is made up of Vlad Coufal, Ben Johnson, Thilo Kehrer and Aaron Cresswell. Lukasz Fabianski plays in goal.

Full West Ham XI: Fabianski; Coufal, Johnson, Kehrer, Cresswell; Rice, Soucek; Bowen, Paqueta, Emerson; Scamacca. Subs: Areola, Randolph, Fornals, Antonio, Lanzini, Downes, Ogbonna, Benrahma, Coventry.

Full Southampton XI: Bazunu; Walker-Peters, Bella-Kotchap, Salisu, Perraud, Ward-Prowse, Maitland-Niles, Elyounoussi, Aribo, Adams, A Armstrong. Subs: McCarthy, Lyanco, Caleta-Car, Larios, Djenepo, Diallo, S Armstrong, Mara, Edozie.

Curious to see the formation, could also be a back 5 with Emerson and Coufal wide, and Cresswell and Johnson on each side of Kehrer (but then Paqueta would be on the left wing, or perhaps a front 3 with Scamacca the most forward?)
