West Ham man Paqueta expected to shine at Wembley

It looks like Lucas Paqueta is gearing up for action when Brazil takes on England at Wembley this Saturday. Paqueta has earned a call-up to his national team under new head coach Dorival Junior. He was dropped by the former coach last autumn amid news of an FA investigation into potential betting breaches, and since then, the 26-year-old hasn’t seen any action for his country.

His impressive stats of seven goals and six assists for the Irons this season tell part of the story, but the struggles Brazil has faced in his absence paint an even clearer picture. In the 15 games without Paqueta this season, Brazil have managed to win just three matches, against Bolivia, Lincoln, and Peru.

Now, Paqueta returns to a Brazil squad dealing with injuries and a lack of experience. He’s ready to take on a new role, especially since Dorival is likely to use him as an attacking No. 10, rather than in a deeper position.

For us Hammers, there’s some good news too. Brazil’s two international friendlies are both happening in Europe, which means Paqueta won’t have to make the long trip back to South America. That’s a relief for David Moyes, who won’t have to worry about him returning jetlagged.

Paqueta himself is thrilled to be back representing his country. During a pre-match press conference, he made sure to praise both his national team manager and his club boss, David Moyes.

The England vs. Brazil game promises to be an exciting one, and it wouldn’t be surprising if West Ham’s and Brazil’s star player takes centre stage.
